Watch “American Chopper” on TLC and get a head on look at the bike making industry.Based on Orange County Choppers, a custom bike shop in New York, the series gives bike lovers a look at how a beautiful piece of machinery is built. Orange County Choppers was run by a father and son team, Paul Teutul Sr. and Jr., and their differences led to beautifully crafted cycles, as well as family tensions. Riders, start your engine. Over the course of the next month, America is offering several locations for your favorite biking events. From Daytona Beach to Arkansas, you’re bound to find a bike fest close by.Las Vegas BikeFestSeptember 30th October 3rdWith a particular focus on male riders, activities include a Miss Las Vegas Bikini and Wet tee shirt contest. However, don’t be put off ladies, there’s also a Hog Out contest, as well as an Artistry in Iron show; where bikers can admire the work of custom builders.South Padre Island, TexasTime period: October 7th-10thFor 16 years, South Padre has hosted their annual Bikefest. Within this Texas event there are a number of activities to look forward to; such as Coastal Current Poker Run, the Biker Bra Bash (in support of breast cancer) and the Iron Horse Memorial Parade.Daytona BeachTime period: October 14-17thBiketoberfest, an event that has been running for 18 years, returns this October. At some point, take a break from riding and stop by the Broken Spoke Saloon. There are a number of performers lined up for the event; such as 7 Bridges Road the Eagles Tribute, Hells Bells AC/DC Tribute, and Houses of the Holy Led Zeppelin Tribute.
Harley-Davidson
Established in 1903, Harley-Davidson has outlived multiple periods of strife. Not only did the company survive the Great Depression, but also, a period of international competition with Japan.Having become such a successful corporation, it’s hard to believe that the company’s first motorcycle was unsuccessful. The first power cycle, formed in their founding year, couldn’t handle the Milwaukee terrain. Yet, the founders weren’t quitters, and the second motorcycle followed close behind. In comparison to their first engine (7.07 cubic inches) the second cycle contained a 24.74 cubic inch engine. The resulting machine took fourth place in a Milwaukee Motorcycle contest.
